So much of life is getting ready for something.  It might be a trip, a change, a meeting, or some significant event coming up. The preparation can make all the difference in the outcome.  The way we start each day is no different.

Waking up can be more than hitting the snooze button one final time and heading to the bathroom with one eye on the clock.  It takes a decision to give time for the first hour of each precious day in shaping how the rest of the day will go.

This hour before the rest of our personal world wakes up allows us to set our intentions for the day and get ourselves ready, not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally for whatever the new day will bring.  It is like breakfast for the head.  We can salute the sun with prayer, inspirational reading, the newspaper, coffee, the radio, the morning news on TV, cheerios, a smoothie, or simply finding east and watching the sun make its steady rise in the sky.  Sunlight is a powerful healing for our body and for our mind.

Our personal ritual for mindfully beginning our day counts and becomes a comfort we can rely upon.  If we are responsible for waking others to begin their days, it can be the first blessing of the day we are privileged to give.
